This week we started a new project with Baseless Fabric.
Every Wednesday at 1pm, just after lunch, our friends from Baseless Fabric are running informal and fun singalongs for all our older visitors. It doesn’t matter if you think you can sing or not, we are much more interested in making sure you have a good time. This is because there is really solid evidence that singing is good for you!
The On-line Library of Medicine carries a piece of research from 2020 that concludes:
Policy makers in different national contexts should consider social singing activities to promote the health and wellbeing of older adults as they are inexpensive to run and have been shown to be enjoyable and effective.
In 2015, a University of Helsinki research team revealed that:
caregiver-implemented musical activities, particularly singing, helped older adults with mild to moderate dementia. It was found to be beneficial for memory, thinking skills and the ability to find their way around. This was especially true for those younger than 80 with mild dementia.
And in April 2024, the Harringay Community Newsletter outlined the ‘seven surprising benefits of singing’:
- Singing boosts memory and brain power
- Singing increases stress-busting hormones
- Regular singing can stop you from snoring!
- Singing fights anxiety and depression
- Singing can boost immunity
- Singing helps you learn foreign languages
- Singing has similar benefits to yoga (re. breathing)
Our sessions are free and fun – and you are welcome to join us
