We are half way through our programme of activities supported by the Mayor of London’s Fund to ensure that no London child goes hungry in the summer holidays.
We had a great Saturday morning session with Mitcham Zoo on 26 July, with free hotdogs on offer at a safe distance away from the snakes and turtles.
On Thursday 14th August, we hosted Really Big Pants and their interactive ‘Wonky’ performance which was enthusiastically greeted by local children who stayed on afterwards for pasta bake and snacks. There were a few of the healthy snacks left over so we rang Gareth at Mitcham Zoo who collected up the fresh food and sent us a photo of snacking turtles a few moments later!
Grow Your Own Food session next week
Next week we have a free grow your own food session sponsored by Pot Gang on Thursday 21 August, starting at 10.30am in the New Horizon Centre. We will have our friends from the Mayor of London’s Fund attending so you can also give feedback about what you think of our programme and the Mayor’s approach to holiday hunger if you want!
We are giving away re-potted plants
At the Grow your Own session we are also giving away some re-potted houseplants as we have loads, thanks in part to the efforts of volunteer Anta, who has the greenest fingers in East Mitcham! We know that houseplants can help to boost feelings of well-being so we are spreading the love!
Volunteer for the Garden Plot
You can also find out about what we are growing in our Garden Plot – there’s a few crops coming to harvest so it’s a good time to get stuck in as a gardening volunteer – we will have sign-up forms at the session.
Mitcham’s Got Talent
And lastly, we are also promoting Mitcham’s Got Talent – if you didn’t catch this as the Mitcham Bandstand Launch last week you can find out more on 21August!
