This month, our south London streets are marked by a rare and beautiful alignment. As our neighbours observe Easter, Eid, and Passover, the themes of spiritual reflection, sacrifice, and renewal are being expressed across the rooms and spaces at Commonside’s New Horizon Centre in Pollards Hill.
At Commonside, we see ourselves as the “glue” of this community. People turn to us when they have nowhere else to go. But today, this glue is being stretched so thin.
The stories we carry
We are proud of our local authority-funded outreach but the reality is that the need in our neighbourhood consistently outpaces our budget. This past week alone, two encounters reminded us why our thriving community hub welcome is so vital:
- A bright light dimming: we sat with a brilliant young woman who loves learning but who feels crushed by the weight of school-based bullying and body shaming. While others may dismiss her as “over-dramatic,” we see young talent at risk of being lost to isolation and despair.
- A search for sanctuary: a young person came to us late in the evening because they were no longer safe at home. We spent hours in our quiet room, acting as the bridge between them and the emergency services that could guarantee their safety and on-going safeguarding.
These are not just “cases.” These are our neighbours and friends. They are the core of our community. Without the open doors of the New Horizon Centre, these stories might have tragic endings. We are here to prevent the crisis before it happens.
